the sport

Mountain biking is a form of sport and a recreational activity which involves riding a bicycle of particular design called “mountain bikes”. It is usually done off-road on bike trails called “singletracks”, narrow trails located in forests or fields similar to trail running. However, modern mountain biking can also be done in more urban locations, as in the case of street riding. In general, mountain biking as an individual sport, requires physical endurance, bike riding skills and self-reliance, because often, bikers must rely on their skills to repair broken bikes or flat tires, especially when they are miles away from help.

Mountain biking is classified as cross country, riding point-to-point tracks which includes climbs and descents on different terrain, downhill, which generally involves riding a mountain bike downhill and include jumping gaps and large drops. Downhill is considered the most extreme among forms of mountain biking. Freeride, is similar to BMX riding and is a “do anything” form, only on mountain bikes while trials/street riding involves hopping and jumping bikes over obstacles and can be accomplished on- or off-road.
